Disability Case Study

 Discrimination against Disability

Discrimination against the disabled can mean lots of things. For example, some physically disabled people may be treated badly however, some mentally disabled people may also be discriminated upon. Disability discrimination can be a negative thing however, sometimes it is necessary in certain environments to prevent themselves more harm. For example, a skyscraper building firm may not be able to hire a person in a wheelchair due to accessibility reasons.

Disability is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. This means that employers cannot legally discriminate against a potential or current employee due to their disability.

An example

A person in a wheelchair wants to work as an accountant in a 30-story building. The employer cannot deny this role unless there is going to be any harm to the employee. The business must also ensure that the employee has appropriate adjustments to the work environment such as lifts and other access arrangements.
